The Goncourt Choice of India 2026

Are you a fluent French speaker from India? Submit a full translation sample of a book and ย win a publishing contract! ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ทโœ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ.

The call is open for the translation from French to the following languages: English (TBC), Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.

The French Institute in India and Apeejay Trust announced the launch of an annual translation contest which will reward the best translation. The Goncourt Choice of India aims to foster literary exchange and promote translation into Indian languages.

For the first edition, candidates are invited to translate an excerpt from A Night at the Heart (La Nuit au cล“ur) by Nathacha Appanah a recipient of Goncourt Choice of India 2026, Prix Femina 2025 and Prix Goncourt des Lycรฉens 2025.

Selection Process

Submissions will be evaluated by a jury composed of an expert translator and a renowned author in the selected target language. Entries will be assessed on literary quality, accuracy, stylistic sensitivity, and overall coherence.

Award

The winning translator will be offered a translation grant for the full translation of the book and will be guided to findย a publisher for the publication.

Application Timeline

  • 1st May 2026: application deadline
  • May 2026: Jury evaluation and selection of the winning translator
  • December 2026: submission of the complete first draft of the translation
  • March 2027: Publication of the translated work

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:
1: Be translators from French into Hindi, Marathi, Bengali ,Tamil, Malayalam or Kannada
2: Be available over the following ten months to complete the full translation if selected
