The Japanese Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) is offering a fully funded scholarship for international student to study in a Japanese University for free.
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship is a research based scholarship open to undergraduate students willing to study at a Japanese university.

MEXT Scholarship (Japanese Government Scholarship)
Through study in Japan, MEXT aims to build human resources who will contribute to the global development and also foster friendship between the applicantโs home country and Japan.ย
International students can submit their MEXT application if they meet the following qualification and conditions for study in Japan:
- Nationality: Applicants must be from a country with a diplomatic relation with Japan.
- ย Age: Applicant should be between 18 years or above by the time of submitting application to a Japanese university. (must be born on or after April 2, 2001).ย
- Academic Background: Applicants must meet one of the condition below:
- Applicants must have received a certificate equivalent to a Japanese upper secondary school in countries other than Japan. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
- Japanese Language: Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese and carry out their academic studies in Japan in Japanese.
- Health: Applicants must submit a health certificate in the prescribed format signed by a physician attesting that the applicant has no physical or mental conditions hindering the applicantโs study in Japan.
- Arrival in Japan: Applicants must be able to arrive in Japan between April 1, 2026, and April 7, 2026.
- Visa Requirement: Applicant must newly obtain a โStudentโ visa at the Japanese embassy located in their home country, and should enter Japan with the status of residence as โStudent.
What are the eligibility criteria for the Mext Scholarship?
The eligibility to apply for a MEXT Scholarship is to be country nationality withย diplomatic relation with Japan,ย be between 18 years or above by the time of submitting application to a Japanese university, must have received a certificate equivalent to a Japanese upper secondary school in countries other than Japan, be eligible for enrollment in a Japanese university, be willing to learn Japanese and carry out their academic studies in Japan in Japanese, must submit a health certificate, Arrival in ahould be able to arrive in Japan between April 1, 2026, and April 7, 2026 and must obtain a โStudentโ visa at the Japanese embassy located in their home country.
MEXT SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
- ย Allowance: ยฅ117,000 per month.
- Education Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be waived.
- Traveling Expenses: MEXT covers flight ticket to Japan for guaranteed applicants who will arrive in Japan during the specified period (between April 1, 2026, – April 7, 2026)
Required documents needed for the Mext Scholarship?
Applicants should submit the following application documents for the MEXT scholarship:
- Application Form.
- Direct Placement Preference Form.
- Academic transcript(s) for all school years of school/university attended.
- Certificate(s) of graduation of school/university attended.
- Recommendation letter from either a class teacher or principal of last school attended.
- Medical certificate.
- Certificate of enrollment.
Certificate of university enrollment qualification examination.
Certificate of language proficiency.
How to apply for the Mext Scholarship
- Submit the necessary document to the Japanese embassy in your home country.
- The Japanese embassy will screen applicants through the submitted application documents. Then conduct written academic examinations and interviews for the applicants.
- Announcement of the date and time of the notification of the results of the First Screening by the Japanese embassy in home of the applicant.
Applicants who have passed the First Screening will be recommended to MEXT. - MEXT will conduct a Second Screening of the recommended applicants and decide the selection of the scholarship grantees. MEXT selects candidates from each course.
- The Japanese embassy will inform applicants of final selection after January 2026.
What Language Proficiency Certificate is Required for MEXT Scholarship
Japanese or English is accepted for certificate of language proficiency for MEXT Scholarship. However applicants are advised to learn Japanese before traveling.ย
Applicant can submit documents attesting to competency in Japanese or English (certificates should be not less than two years from the date of application to the Japanese diplomatic mission.ย
